"While other professions are concerned with changing the environment to suit the weakened body, chiropractic is concerned with strengthening the body to suit the environment."
-B.J. Palmer, D.C.

“Illnesses hover constantly above us, their seeds blown by the wind, but they do not set in the terrain unless the terrain is ready to receive them.”
-Claude Bernard ( a contemporary of Louis Pasteur)

A Brief History of Chiropractic:
A Chiropractor’s main method of treatment is through manual manipulation of the spine and extremities. Manual manipulation has been around probably since the first caveman had an ache or pain that was relieved by another caveman pressing on them.

Speculation about our early ancestors aside, references to manual manipulation are found as far back as ancient Greece. The physician Hippocrates said “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases”. Hippocrates, also known as the “Father of Medicine” because of his influence on modern day healthcare practices, is also the man after whom the Hippocratic Oath is named.

A more recent example can be found in Thomas Edison who believed that “The Doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease”.

Although manual manipulation has been around perhaps as long as humans have existed, the branch of health care known as Chiropractic was officially begun in 1895 by D.D. Palmer. This time period in medical history was characterized by what is known as “heroic measures”. Heroic measures applied by an MD certainly has its place in the spectrum of healthcare. However, during this time in history heroic measures were being applied to virtually any ailment often with the result of killing the patient. An example of this is the use of blood letting to cure a fever. The result of this was that many patients sought out an “alternative” approach for their healthcare. It is in this environment that Chiropractors first began practicing. From that time onward Chiropractic has been the safest, most conservative care available.

From 1895 up to the 1990’s Doctor’s of Chiropractic were nearly exclusively found in private practice. In recent history, however, Chiropractors have been incorporated into hospital settings, including the emergency room; they can be found in the military both as contractors and serving as commissioned officers. Chiropractors treat the U.S. Olympic teams and are team doctors for both amateur and professional sports teams.

It used to be the case that chiropractic treatment was used as a last resort; typically the patient had seen many doctors and found no relief. However, after their first chiropractic treatment they finally experienced some degree of relief and wellness. Today, however, due to the conservative nature of chiropractic care and the results achieved with it’s use, inclusion into mainstream healthcare is growing every day. So, whether you have just thrown your back out or are dealing with a long standing issues, Chiropractic care can very often be helpful. In fact lots of people find relief and wellness with chiropractic treatment.
